A message from Laura...
"Therapist first, Movement Educator second"
I love transforming my client's lives through Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis sessions, while weaving in my vast and deep well of knowledge (both Eastern and Western) of Yoga, Breathwork and Chi Kung allowing me to offer my client's a depth of study and experience rarely found. I also teach a healthy dose of Contemporary Pilates while utilizing my advanced skills as a manual therapist. My sessions are playful, educational, inspiring, and transformational. I believe that health comes from harmony of mind, body and spirit, and that exercise is a vehicle for self exploration, healing, wholeness, and joy. Ask anyone who knows me what I am passionate about, and they'll answer: Gyrotonic Yoga Pilates and Dance. For me, teaching the joy of mindful movement is my life’s path and I look forward to sharing this gift with you.
A message from Steve...
I believe in the power of the mind-body connection and I've witnessed firsthand it's miraculous ability to transform my client's body and their movement abilities. I enjoy using my artists eye to spot and refine movement asymmetries to bring about lasting change. Combined with hands on Assisted Stretch Therapy, sessions can be truly transformational. From regaining the ability to walk without assistance, to refining athletic performance, I believe that movement has the ability to bring my clients from where they are...to where they want to be.
About Laura ~
As a third generation Los Angelean, Laura Crittendon first developed the love and joy of mindful movement while studying ballet, modern dance, choreography, martial arts and theatre as a child and teen in Arcadia, California. As an adult, Laura has performed on stages all over the Western US as well as on numerous music videos and even a few movies. Laura (along with her husband Steve and their son Shaun) lived in Hawaii for nearly 20 years where Laura trained as a professional Hula Dancer and later professional Belly Dancer/Cabaret Dancer, Choreographer, and Show Producer.
Laura's first job at age 17, following a severe skiing accident, was as a physical therapy assistant at the very same sports rehab center in Arcadia where she received therapy to heal her injuries. She had the honor of working with several amazing Therapists who taught her how movement changes neuropathways in the brain, gut and spinal cord and how movement can heal and strengthen from the inside out. At the rehab center, Laura worked with all levels of rehabilitation from athletes to stroke patients. Laura was deeply moved by the progress she witnessed her patients make as they recovered from life altering injuries and illnesses. So Laura chose to pursue a career that would deepen her understanding of the way the human body is intended to move and heal and that would allow her to share this gift with more people outside of the physical therapy realm. This journey began with Pre-Med school, Massage School, Graduate School and finally opening Blossoming Lotus GYROTONIC (formerly Kona Pilates LLC and Gyrotonic Kona in Kailua Kona, Hawaii in 2003). Now, as of 2017, located in Upland, CA.
Professional Training: To date, Laura has accumulated over 40 years experience and thousands of hours of advanced clinical training and education in body-mind-spirit health, therapeutic exercise, Manual/Massage Therapy, and Assisted Stretch Therapies. She is Hawaii state licensed and board certified as an Integrative Medical Massage Therapist and Movement Therapist. Laura graduated from the Hawaiian Islands School of Massage with 1,250 hours of advanced training in Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage, CranioSacral, Myofascial, NeuroMuscular, and Exercise Therapies. In 2002, she graduated as Valedictorian from he University of Hawaii with an Honors degree in Psychology, a minor in Hawaiian, and a Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling. In graduate school Laura studied Transpersonal Psychology, Mind-Body Complementary Medicine, Integrative Health, and Consciousness Studies. Laura has trained with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) founder Jon Kabat-Zinn. In addition, she trained professionally as a Transpersonal Psychotherapist, a professional Hula dancer (having danced in three Merrie Monarch Hula Festival/Competitions under Kumu Hula Etua Lopez), professional belly dancer, cabaret dancer/choreographer and show producer, 2nd degree black belt martial arts instructor and martial arts school owner. Laura is the past Resident Dance Movement Therapist/Master Teacher for HD Dance Co & Performing Arts in Corona. Laura has been honored to be a visiting Master Teacher for a variety of Corporations and Wellness-oriented academies across Southern California and Hawaii. Passionate about community service, Laura has volunteered thousands of hours working with the severely mentally ill in Kona and served for three years on the Board of Directors for a local Kailua Kona non-profit organization.
About Steve ~
Steve grew up in South Bay and North San Diego County. He participated and competed in most X Games sports (skateboarding, surfing, BMX, Motocross) and trained in Martial Arts. He was also the "prodigy" of every school and art school he attended.
Steve received a full undergraduate scholarship in the fine arts for both his watercolor portraiture and his sculpture. Steve views movement (and particularly Gyrotonic) as art in motion and organic engineering for the body. Persuaded by his wife Laura to leave his job as an architectural sheet metal and waterproofing designer and join her in a career in the movement and massage arts, was one of the smartest choices he's ever made (the first being marrying his wife Laura). Steve's unique ability as an artist to see how the body is interconnected has given him (and his clients) a unique advantage.
Professional training: Steve Von Hargett has over 25 years experience teaching movement and 7,000+ hours of training in therapeutic exercise, Massage/Manual Therapy, and Assisted Stretch Therapy. He is Hawaii state licensed and board certified as an Integrative Medical and Manual Massage Therapist. Steve is a certified STOTT Pilates instructor in Matwork and Reformer and is comprehensively trained on all apparatus including STOTT's prestigious specialized rehab program only available to licensed medical professionals. Steve is certified in The GYROTONIC® Method, including the specialized equipment and advanced Assisted Stretch Therapy techniques. He is also a certified third degree Black Belt Martial Arts instructor.
Steve has been teaching movement for over twenty-five years. As a full undergraduate scholarship recipient in the fine arts, Steve brings a unique approach with an "eye" for proper alignment in both movement as well as various therapies. His specialty is working with those with injuries ranging from minor sprains/strains, neck injuries/whiplash, shoulder injuries, sciatica, low back pain, knee & ankle/foot injuries, and working with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patients.
About Mari ~
Mari, a California native, is an ex-professional dancer with over 20 years of teaching experience. She earned her BA degree in Dance from UC Irvine with honors, specializing in Performance and Teaching. It was at UCI that she was first introduced to The Pilates Method. Supplementing her dance classes with Pilates exercises made a huge impact on her dancing, improving her technique immensely, and she was hooked for life!
Soon after graduating from UCI, she completed the Pilates Method Teacher Training Program at Studio du Corps in Costa Mesa, California under the direction of esteemed UCI Dance and Pilates professor, Diane Diefenderfer. Upon completion of this training, she was invited to start her teaching career at The Ron Fletcher Company in Los Angeles. As a result of her apprenticeship and teaching hours there, under the sought after guidance of Michael Podwal, she was awarded an honorary Ron Fletcher Company Teacher Training certification. Mari continued to expand her teaching experience by working in several Pilates and Physical Therapy studios located in the Los Angeles area including Burbank, Studio City, Topanga Canyon, Silverlake and Los Feliz.
During this time, a colleague recommend that she try The Gyrotonic Expansion System, as she might find it even more complimentary to dance techniques than The Pilates Method. She took the advice. After only one Gyrotonic session, she fell in love with the movement discipline and knew she was meant to study it further and teach it to others. She completed the Gyrotonic Level 1 Teacher Training Course with Master Trainer Lisa Marie Goodwin and began teaching right away.
Additionally, Mari is a RYT-200 hour certified Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance. She teaches Yoga and Pilates physical education courses at Pomona College, as well as various styles of yoga at local private studios. She also serves as one of the lead educators for the Claremont Yoga Teacher Training Program.
Mari lives in Claremont with her husband, two kids, several cats and a dog. Although her performing days are mostly over, she finds an outlet for artistic expression through continuing to be student of dance. She is eternally grateful for the opportunity to help others feel strong, connected, graceful and empowered in their bodies by sharing with them her knowledge of these beautiful and beneficial movement methodologies.
