Master Dennis Kelly
in a study sponsored by the National Institute of Health. This was a six week program for a Big Island substance abuse clinic. Most of the participants were court ordered to the clinic for treatment. Laura was chosen to participate since two of the counselors at the clinic were students of Laura's and these counselors felt their clients would benefit from her work. Laura taught a revolving group of 20+ adults the basic fundamentals of conscious breathwork, meditation instruction, combined with simple Chi Kung to reduce stress and create an opportunity for mental focus and choice vs knee jerk reactions (when experiencing a stressful moment or a "trigger" to use their substance of choice). At the end of the six week series the participants were given a questionnaire to determine which of the practices they liked best, which instructor they felt connected best with the group, which practice they actually used outside of the clinic, and which practice they felt was the most useful in their daily lives. Laura’s Conscious Breathwork and Chi Kung came in second place to massage for the practice the participants liked most (who doesn’t like massage?). Laura’s program came in first place with a 100% rating in the other three categories: 1) the instructor who connected most with the group, 2) THE only practice that the participants used outside of the clinic, and 3) the practice that they believed was helpful in their daily life.

Chi Kung, or Qigong, originated in China around 5,000 years ago. Qigong is made up of two Chinese characters Qi (or chi) and Gong (or Kung). Qi (pronounced chi) is the “vital energy” or “life force.” Master Mantak Chia describes Qi as "the glue between our body, mind, and spirit, the link between our perception of the inner and outer worlds." Qi may also be thought of as electricity. It can't be seen, yet it can most certainly be felt. Gong has several meanings such as art, skill, work, exercise, manipulation, and self-discipline. When you combine these two into Chi Kung, it stands for “cultivation of energy.”
In traditional Chinese medicine (which works within the framework of preventing illness or injury versus providing care only afterwards), an exercise should consist of two equally important parts, the “inner” and “outer” aspects of exercise. The inner aspect influences the meridians (the energy pathways of the body) and the organs, while the outer aspect influences the muscles, joints, ligaments and bones. Qigong can accomplish both missions.
Numerous research studies have been performed by groups such as the National Institute on Aging, The National Institute of Health, and countless medical centers and universities. These studies have shown, time and time again, the value of adding Chi Kung to one’s life.
What is Meditation and Conscious Breathwork?
Meditation sessions utilize techniques from the modern science of Biofeedback, an area of advanced study for Laura in her graduate school education. Laura also blends in aspects of ancient Yoga. Together, these meditation sessions are an amazing practice to reduce stress, calm your mind, find focus, reduce blood pressure and more.
Meditation is easy to learn, easy to do, and brings HUGE health benefits. Allow Laura to be your guide in learning just how simple and effective a regular meditation practice can be.
Try this: Allow your breath to become smooth and comfortably deep. As you breathe, notice how your rib cage or your belly moves with each inhale and each exhale. Listen to the sound of your breath. Can you hear it? Now, continue to read on as you focus on your breath. There. You're already learning the basics of a Conscious Breathwork Meditation. Doesn't that feel better? Good job!
